Nationwide Black Day Observed in Mourning for Late Wildlife Veterinarians
New Delhi, Report Sachin Koli :- Indian Veterinary Association (IVA) observed a nationwide day of mourning and Black Day on April 6, 2026, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families of young wildlife veterinarians, Dr. Vaisakh Viswan and Dr. Sameeksha Reddy, (Shri Mati Shylaja Reddy Mother of Dr. Sameeksha Reddy) who tragically lost their lives while serving in the line of duty. The observance was marked across the country as a tribute to their dedication, courage, and invaluable contribution to wildlife health and conservation.   On this occasion, the Association reiterated several key demands aimed at strengthening the safety, recognition, and professional framework of veterinarians working in challenging environments. IVA called for the establishment of a dedicated veterinary cadre within forest departments, structured and specialized training programs for wildlife veterinarians, and the formulation of clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for zoo and wildlife veterinary services. The Association also urged the inclusion of risk allowance for veterinarians under the recommendations to be submitted before the 8th Central Pay Commission Committee, along with adequate compensation and long-term support for the families affected by such tragic incidents.
The observance witnessed participation from veterinary doctors and students across India, who wore black badges at their workplaces and institutions as a mark of respect and collective mourning. The peaceful demonstrations reflected unity within the veterinary fraternity and highlighted the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure occupational safety and professional recognition. A press conference was held at the Press Club of India, New Delhi, where the Shri Mati Shylaja Reddy mother of late Dr. Sameeksha Reddy was present. Addressing the media, IVA   National Spokesperson Dr. Bhupender Chahal outlined the purpose and significance of the nationwide observance and emphasized the Association’s commitment to pursuing constructive dialogue with authorities. Dr. Vijay Kumar, Treasurer of IVA, Dr. Laxmi Srinivasan IVA Lady Wing, Dr. Dipankar Seth, Zonal Secretary, Dr. Abhishek Pratap Singh IVA National Convenor, Dr. Shirish Anant Prakash Nigam, Dr. Abhay Triguna, Dr. Praveen Dutt Sharma, Dr Rahul Pawar and Dr. Preet Pal Singh, along with other senior members and representatives, also attended the briefing. IVA President Dr. Umesh Sharma had earlier declared the nationwide Black Day in remembrance of the irreplaceable loss of these young professionals and to honor their service to the nation.
